The Science of Relay Bypassing: Compatibility & Testing Guide

At RE-CONTROL, our advanced Year-Make-Model Filter catalogs all rigorously tested and officially supported vehicles. However, given the vast diversity of global automotive fuse box architectures, we haven't mapped every single configuration yet.

If your specific vehicle isn't listed in our primary database, you can easily perform a quick diagnostic check to determine if your platform is compatible with a RE-CONTROL TIPM Bypass Cable.

Architectural Note: While our flagship TIPM Plug-In Relay Systems are precision-molded exclusively for the TIPM-7 integrated fuse box style, our TIPM Bypass Cables offer universal flexibility across a much broader spectrum of terminal connections.

The 3-Step Compatibility Checklist

For a RE-CONTROL bypass system to successfully restore power to your fuel delivery network, your vehicle's factory circuitry must meet the following three engineering requirements:

1. Internal Relay Placement (Circuit Architecture)

The vehicle's factory fuel pump relay must be located INSIDE the fuse box (soldered directly to the internal circuit boards).

How to verify: Check your owner's manual or the diagram printed under the fuse box lid.
The Lucky Exception: If your fuel pump relay is a standard, standalone plastic cube that plugs in next to the fuses, you don't need a bypass at all—you can simply pull it out and swap it for a cheap replacement.

2. The Downstream Fuse Rule (The Critical Voltage Test)

To use a bypass cable, the electrical flow must follow this exact sequence:

+12 VDC Source -> Fuel Pump Relay -> Fuse Slot -> Fuel Pump

If the factory relay comes after the fuse, you cannot inject power safely.

How to Test with a Multimeter: Turn your vehicle completely OFF and measure the voltage at the top of your factory fuel pump fuse.
0.0 VDC (PASSED): Your architecture is perfect. Bypassing is 100% viable. (Standard on most 2007+ Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, Jeep, and VW platforms).
12.0V - 12.7V (FAILED): The relay is downstream of the fuse. A bypass cable will NOT work.
Incompatible Vehicles: Due to this reverse circuit layout, 2010 and older Dodge Ram trucks (2008-2010 architectures), Chrysler 200/300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Avenger are fundamentally incompatible (though rare success has been documented on 2009 Challengers).
Note on Newer Models: In 2019+, Ram trucks moved the relay out of the TIPM box entirely, returning to an easily serviceable plug-in layout.

3. A Valid "Key-On" Power Source

Your fuse box must contain an available slot that provides +12 VDC ONLY when the ignition key is cycled to the RUN/START position (0.0 VDC when the vehicle is off).

Requirements: The source circuit must utilize at least a 20-amp factory rating. Since standard automotive fuel pumps draw roughly 6-9 amps under load, you need a source slot with at least 15 amps of overhead to ensure total safety.
Typical Hot Spots: Cigarette lighters, rear power outlets, or run/start accessory fuse slots tied directly to the main ignition relay. Add-a-circuit_cables_EXPLAINED

How to Run a Quick Pre-Purchase Test

Want to confirm your fuel pump is actually healthy before ordering? You can manually test the circuit:

1. Briefly touch the cold side of your fuel pump fuse slot with a verified external +12 VDC power source.
2. If you instantly hear a distinct humming sound from the rear gas tank area, your fuel pump is fully operational—confirming that an internal TIPM relay failure is your root cause.
3. Deploying a RE-CONTROL Bypass Cable bridges your "Key-On" source directly into this verified slot, enabling seamless ignition in under 5 minutes.
